"Skills & Abilities are only useful if you are at the right place...
Where are you now?"
Here are a few simple guidelines that can help you when appointed to an interview:
Before Interview:
- When being appointed to an interview, always ask for a telephone number.
This will help you just in case you were late or had to reschedule.
- Before going to an interview make sure you investigate about the place, e.g. Field or Industry, scope and mission.
Search for a website and browse it thoroughly.
- Dress for Success:
- If appointed for an HR interview, go for formal or semi formal attire.
- For a technical interview especially in plant, you can wear less formal attire i.e. business casual.
- Make sure you use the least stressful way of transportation to reach your interview destination, be there at least 10 to 15 minutes earlier.
During Interview:
- Make a good first impression. You can start with a handshake, a smile, and good eye contact.
- Try to relax, be positive.
- Support yourself with relevant information. Bring along any supporting documents you might have.
- Be honest, be yourself. Do not overstate your qualifications.
- Be friendly and polite to everyone since every person you meet during the course of the day is a potential evaluator.
- Be aware of both verbal and nonverbal communication.
- Try to answer every question and avoid saying "I don't recall" or "I've never been into this".
- Avoid constant use of filler words like "you know", "right", "like", etc.
- Maintain reasonable eye contact and be aware of negative body language such as crossing your arms.
- Listen attentively. Wait for the interviewer to finish speaking before formulating and delivering your answer. Give yourself time to compose an answer.
After Interview:
- Review the day. Immediately following the interview, review the questions you had trouble answering. Reflect on ways in which you could answer them more effectively if they are ever asked again.
- If you are invited back for a second interview, remember that you have better a chance, so prepare well.
